Tech Talk n°3 What is HEMA?

As a nail technician, you are also responsible for your clients' health! Therefore, only use safe products in your salon.

Allergies and uncured products

Allergies that some clients experience, often unjustly associated with the 'demonized' ingredient HEMA, are usually caused by something else.

They are often the result of uncured products. Not everyone seems to remember that a 'hard' product does not necessarily mean a fully 'cured' product.

Health impacts

If someone develops an allergy to HEMA, they must not only avoid coming into contact with uncured nail gel. This person might also develop allergies to other chemicals and could even face issues with future dental fillings.

HEMA free does not automatically mean safe

It is important to emphasize that HEMA-free products are not necessarily synonymous with safety! Safety depends on the overall composition and how we handle the product. If the product contains banned chemicals, high acids, non-cosmetic pigments, or impurities, there is a much greater risk of developing allergies or even more serious health issues.

Professional training is crucial

Professional training, the use of regulated products, and the right curing lamp are crucial for proper curing and preventing allergies.

Because many clients associate HEMA with allergies, the #hemafree label is often used as a marketing tactic to suggest product safety.

HEMA-free products are a legal requirement for consumers performing home manicures, as they lack training and often use cheap, incompatible products.
