Tech Talk n°14 Why do fluo pigments fade after UV exposure?

Why do fluorescent colours fade after uv exposure?

We know that fluorescent pigments have the ability to absorb high energy, invisible light and to re-emit this energy into the visible light spectrum, creating these very vibrant, bright colours.

Now, the very essence of fluorescence itself contributes to the fading over time, so the continuous absorption and re-emission of light will gradually degrade the pigment molecule and cause what we call photodegradation magic.

Are there fluo cosmetic pigments that do not fade?

There are no cosmetic fluorescent pigments that do not fade. The way to minimize fading is by formulating our colours in a specific manner. We combine both fluorescent and non-fluorescent pigments of the same shade into a single formula. As the fluorescent pigment fades, the non-fluorescent pigment remains, ensuring a nice colour on the nail.
